Community Foundations Network

Mississippi has a total of seven (7) active community foundations, all of which are MAG members.  They directly serve 42 of Mississippi’s 82 counties, in which live 75% of the state’s population.  The Community Foundation Network includes:

Community Foundation of East Mississippi | Meridian

Community Foundation of Greater Jackson | Jackson

Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi | Hernando

CREATE Foundation | Tupelo

Gulf Coast Community Foundation | Gulfport

The Greater PineBelt Community Foundation | Hattiesburg

Community Foundation of Washington County | Greenville

The Community Foundations Network was the first affinity group formed by MAG members.  The Network began meeting quarterly in conjunction with regularly scheduled MAG membership meetings in 2014.  Designed to focus attention on issues and challenges unique to community foundations, their donors and their stakeholders, the Community Foundations Network initially discussed the following topics:

  • Disaster funding and how to build a better system for responding to the needs of donors when disasters occur
  • Participation in events such as the Mississippi Day of Giving and National Philanthropy Day
  • The need and potential for conducting a Transfer of Wealth study in Mississippi
  • The possibility and potential for developing legislation and policies to create and support an Endow Mississippi initiative

This work led to the publication in November 2016 of Mississippi’s Transfer of Wealth Profile, a study that outlined Mississippi’s philanthropic potential on a county by county basis.  Data from that study is now being used to develop the Endow Mississippi initiative, legislation that will provide tax credits for donations to permanently endowed funds at Mississippi’s community foundations.
