For a fun team-building exercise at a statewide board and staff retreat, I led a scavenger hunt exercise for the board members and staff in the Golden Moon Casino, Philadelphia, MS.

I helped name the new otters at the MS Aquarium in Gulfport, MS.

I have served as the MS Outstanding Jaycette and State Parliamentarian, Long Term Recovery Chair for FEMA after Katrina, Social Sector Subject Matter Expert for BP’s Oil Spill Long Term Recovery Team, Community Impact Vice President, and board member and volunteer for United Way of South MS for two terms.

I have three children that all serve others in their professional lives and seven grandchildren.

I love “holding the ladder” to make people and circumstances better.

Biography

Mary Ellen Calvert, M.Ed. is an Adult Educator and Nonprofit Consultant. She works with organizations in the areas of management development, leadership, strategic planning, collaboration, and many others. She developed curriculum and training modules for the Mid South Collaborative for Nonprofit Development, a three-state nonprofit collaborative, and trained over 250 trainers to deliver training to grassroots organizations across the Mid-South.

In 2010, following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Mary Ellen served as the nonprofit subject-matter expert to assist BP with their long-term recovery plan, developer and initial program director for the Excellence In Action (EIA) nonprofit certification program for the Mississippi Alliance of Nonprofits and Philanthropy as well as former chair of the Harrison County Long Term Recovery Coalition, comprised of over 80 organizations that contributed to helping people return to their homes following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Mary Ellen currently serves as a subject-matter expert for training, capacity-building, and organizational development for the MS Alliance of Nonprofits and Philanthropy.

Mary Ellen lives on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with her husband, Larry. They are the proud grandparents of seven and also live with a rescued Jack Russell mix named Gus.
